Charles Danforth Field III, 78, of Atlanta, Georgia, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away on February 21, 2025.

Anyone who knew Charles knew the depth of his creativity, artistry, love of nature and eye for detail. A member of the American Institute of Architects, Charles was a noteworthy architect who helped build Atlanta, including working on the BellSouth Telecommunications building, the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta, the Coca-Cola building's executive floors, Georgia Tech's North Avenue North dormitories, the Clayton County Aquatic Center and countless other projects. He was also a phenomenal artist, excelling at painting, drawing, wood-carving and more.

Charles was born July 30, 1946, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Charles Danforth Field II and Josephine Morton Lawless Field. He was the second-youngest of the four Field children. He graduated from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Charles was a devoted father to Hayden. There was nothing in this world he loved more than his daughter. He taught her how to drive, whistle and wink, and how to do fractions using their favorite oatmeal raisin cookies. (He also tried to teach her his talents for painting and juggling, but she's still working on those.)

Because Charles was so detail-oriented, he saw the beauty in everything, even things most people didn't. He was never happier than when he was in nature, among the trees or by the river and feeling the sun on his face — whether that meant camping, hiking, sitting on the porch or driving in his beloved Nissan 350Z convertible. (He always said, "There's nothing like a convertible.")

Charles never forgot to feed the birds on his porch and had a green thumb like no other, excelling at landscape design, gardening and being the best plant dad imaginable. His living spaces were always filled with beautiful old books, flourishing greenery and awe-striking art, much of which was made by his own hands.

Charles also had deep interests in space, nanotechnology, quantum mechanics, geopolitics and artificial intelligence. He loved sci-fi books and movies, and his interest in technology and the unexplained is part of what inspired his daughter to become a tech journalist focused on AI.

You could always find Charles at Waffle House or at his favorite Mexican restaurant, where he was a lifelong regular.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Danforth Field II and Josephine Morton Lawless Field. He is survived by his daughter Hayden; his siblings Tony Field (Judy), Rick Field (Cheryl) and Leslie Sharpe (Bob); his nephews Walker Sharpe, Graeme Sharpe and Evan Sharpe; and his nieces Nicole Field-Brzeski, Dorian Field Alan, Ashley Field Johnson and Jamie Castles.

A small memorial service will take place at Blue Heron Nature Preserve on March 1, 2025, at 1:00 PM.
