Samuel W. Taylor, Sr. (1948-2005)

We'd like to celebrate the life of Samuel Walsh Taylor Sr. who passed away January 4, 2025, in Rockdale County, Ga.  Samuel was born June 20, 1948, to business owner Clifton G. Taylor and schoolteacher Catherine M. Taylor of Gainesville, Florida.

Samuel sought change in society.  His passion for civil rights and equality helped change the climate in Gainesville, Fl.  in the early 1970's.  Graduating from Lincoln High School at the age of 15, Samuel enrolled at the University of Florida where his reform journey began.  In 1966, Samuel received his B.A. in Arts and Science. His enthusiasm for education continued. He received his M.A. Political Science, Black Politics in 1972 and was noted in the 1971-1972 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Samuel made history in April 1972 as the first black student body government president of the University of Florida.  His accomplishments were personally recognized by local, state and federal officials.  He received a personal letter from Congress of the United States House of Representatives congratulating him on his appointment.

Samuel was active on the Gainesville Human Relations Advisory Board, desiring to reform the relationship between government and black students.  In an article written in the September 14, 1972, AP News Features, Samuel said his goals were to, "develop myself to the fullest extent in order to bring about as much change as I possibly can as an individual."

Samuel worked most of his life in the IT industry after college.  He and his family moved from Gainesville to Jacksonville where became one of the top young salesmen for Xerox.  The Taylor family moved to the metro Atlanta area in 1977 where Samuel worked for Bell South, AT&T and Ernst & Young.  He finished his corporate career as web designer and business consultant.

Samuel had an ear for classical music and a love for jazz.   His infectious personality and kindness touched many hearts.  He lit up the room with his smile. His sweet soul will be missed.  Samuel is survived by his spouse Juanita Taylor, his son Samuel Walsh Taylor Jr. (daughter-in law Michelle D. Taylor), daughter Andrea Taylor Mitchell (son-in-law Anthony J. Mitchell), nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.  Samuel has fulfilled his goals.  May his legacy continue to impact change.
