Eugene Lewis Obituary
Eugene "Gene" Edward Lewis, 76, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, at Perimeter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunwoody, following a courageous battle with congestive heart failure.
Born on January 23, 1950, in Burke County, Gene was the youngest of twin sons born to Idella Lewis Madison and Robert Blakeney. He spent his early years in Georgia before moving at age 15 to St. Petersburg, FL. There, he graduated from Lakewood High School and later earned his degree from Eckerd College.
Gene enjoyed a distinguished career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation, where he rose to the position of Regional Manager. His work took him across the United States and abroad, including assignments in Germany, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina. In 1993, he made Atlanta his home, beginning a new chapter as a self-employed entrepreneur in the bottled water industry alongside his friend Percy Jones.
Faith and service were cornerstones of Gene's life. A devoted member of St. John's Lutheran Church, he dedicated himself to numerous outreach ministries and charitable efforts, including Intown Community Pantry, Kairos Outside Prison Ministry, and volunteer work supporting foster children. In January 2019, he was honored with the 10th Annual Lutheran MLK Day Service Award in recognition of his compassionate and steadfast service to others.
Gene treasured time with family and often reminisced about his upbringing in Augusta, Georgia, surrounded by his mother, aunts, uncles, and many cousins. He took great joy in organizing Lewis Family Reunions, bringing loved ones together in fellowship and laughter. He also cherished the companionship of his faithful golden retriever, Shad, who frequently accompanied him on his travels.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, John Robert Lewis, and his sister, Julia Yvonne Lewis. He is lovingly remembered by his two sons, Shawn Benjamin and Joshua Love; his beloved grandchild, Laylen Renae Lewis-Love; extended family and many dear friends.
A man of quiet strength, integrity, and unwavering purpose, Gene leaves behind a legacy rooted in faith, perseverance, and service. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspire continued acts of kindness in his honor.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on February 21, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1410 Ponce De Leon Avenue NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30307, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lutheran Services of Georgia, 1330 West Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30309, or to the Path2College 529 plan established for his granddaughter through Ugift529 (code: A6T-K3Z).
