Herman “Mitch” Mitchell, age 82, passed away on January 27, 2026, in Lithonia, Georgia. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Herman was a true native Atlantan whose life was filled with music, faith, and love for people.
A gifted musician, Herman loved playing the drums and singing. He spent many years on the Atlanta club scene, performing at venues such as Busters, Paschal’s, Tanqueray, Chit Chat Lounge, and many others. Over the years, he performed with several bands, Fire & Rain, The All Stars, and The All Star Trio. Through these groups, he provided music for countless parties, weddings, receptions, and social events throughout the metro Atlanta area.
Herman also shared his musical talents at several churches across metro Atlanta, including his current church, Faith and Grace Lutheran Church, as well as at numerous senior living facilities, where his music brought joy to many. Beyond music, Herman loved to cook and enjoyed going out with his dear friends. One of his favorite pastimes was taking bus trips to the casino with his buddy Joe. Well known and loved by many, Herman touched countless lives through his kindness, talent, and warm spirit.
Throughout his life, Herman received many honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Award presented last year by President Joe Biden.
He is survived by his son, Derrick Mitchell (Monika); daughter, Tasha Mitchell; brother, William Mitchell; sister, Elaine Mitchell Holloway (Tony); three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Herman “Mitch” Mitchell will be remembered for his music, his generosity, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him.
